Originally from Istanbul, Turkiye, Esin Gunduz (PhD) explores life’s energies as vibrations, timbre as visceral sensory experience, building landscapes from recorded-voices to surround acoustical instrumental textures at times, creating breathtaking acoustic vistas that have an unveiling quality.
Her works span mediums and diverse contexts:
acoustic / electroacoustic,
chamber music / improvisation,
installation / sound design for theatre,
music for dance / moving image,
and compositions around field-recordings.
They shine a light on the multiplicity and unity in nature, observe and imitate states of consciousness,
and capture spiritual overtones of our lives and life itself.
Dr. Gunduz had her works programmed by Music in the Round, Nonclassical, Iklectik Artlab, Woolwich Works, and Birmingham Opera Company’s Opera Lab in London (and across England), as part of Dark Music Days / Myrkir Músíkdagar at Harpa Concert Hall of Reykjavík (Iceland), as part of Kultur Sommer Wien in Vienna (Austria), at KM28 in Berlin (Germany), at Fruit Market Gallery in Edinburgh (Scotland), at Fondazione Isabella Scelsi in Rome (Italy), at Kulturakademie Tarabya Summer Festival in Istanbul (Turkiye), at the Conservatoire d'art dramatique de Montréal in Quebec and Banff Centre for the Arts and Creativity in Alberta (Canada), YongSiewToh Conservatory of Music (Singapore), for Fire Museum Presents in Philadelphia (United States), and others.
Her work commissioned by and in close-collaboration with London-based mezzosoprano Rosie Middleton:
En-he-du-an-na-me-en (2020),
got excellent festival reviews:
reviews & features.
Dr. Gunduz was one of the Chamber Music America Classical Commissioning awardees as the composer and vocalist of her transformative duo (with Megan Kyle on oboe / English horn):
Senso di Voce.
Gunduz’s compositional work for the duo has been conceived in close collaboration with Kyle:
‘...through itself…’* (2023) is an exploration of İbn 'Arabî’s profound philosophical concepts, through sound.
*This commission has been made possible by the Chamber Music America Classical Commissioning Program, with generous funding provided by The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.
This work is at the core of Senso di Voce’s album:
through itself
which has been released from Sonic Transmissions Records (Norway) - Sept 12 2025.
Being originally from Istanbul, Turkiye, with Turkish immigrant ancestors from the Balkans, and having lived in the United States for two decades, Gunduz currently resides in Austin, Texas. Locally, she performs often and is a board member of the international festival of free jazz, avant-garde, and improvisational music: Sonic Transmissions. She travels for her projects near and far.
Initially,
her latest large-scale work:
‘...through itself…’ (2023) has been premiered on a shared evening with a duo of Susan Alcorn and Simone Baron at the Fire Museum Presents (Philadelphia, PA).
Senso di Voce’s tour of this new work included the venues:
Wesleyan University’s World Music Hall (Middletown, CT), Red Room (Baltimore, MD), and The Institute Library (New Haven, CT).
Its latest performance was also their ‘through itself’ album release concert programmed for Sonic Transmissions Festival and took place at dadaLab, Austin, TX. They were featured alongside Signe Emmeluth (Norway & Denmark) and a quartet of: Lisa Cameron, Joshua Thompson, Henna Chou (Atx), and Karen Ng (Canada).
Previously, Senso di Voce got their debut album of improvisations with Henry Birdsey (of Tongue Depressor): Tierceron
released from the Other Minds (OM) Records
of San Francisco (Jul 2023).
Gunduz’s prominent projects include electroacoustic works based on Sumerian tablets and a piece that turns an alchemical process into sound for the NyCity-based duo: Ultrafizz.
Her most-frequently performed work is for voice and electronics and was created in close collaboration with mezzosoprano Rosie Middleton and was commissioned for her acclaimed Voice(less) Commissioning Series:
En-he-du-an-na-me-en (2020)
is based on the text:
‘Exaltation of Inanna’
by Enheduanna
(the world’s first author known-by-name, a Sumerian high-priestess, ca. 2300 BC).
Rosie Middleton has been touring Europe with her Voice(less) program and has performed En-he-du-an-na-me-en at 10 different festival / series so far:
Iceland Dark Music Days (Myrkir Músíkdagar) programmed it before the pandemic, yet it’s later been premiered in a program by Nonclassical (UK) during Waterloo Festival in London (Jun 2021).
It had its second performance at the Iklectic Artlab, London (Jan 2022), its third performance as part of Music in the Round, Sheffield (Sept 2022) where Gunduz & Middleton were hosted in a Q&A by Tom McKinney of BBC Radio 3 —all venues in England, UK.
As a scholar at the Fondazione Isabella Scelsi, Rosie Middleton gave the work its fourth performance inside the late prolific composer Giacinto Scelsi’s living room in Rome, Italy (Oct 2022).
The fifth performance of the work took place as part of Dark Music Days / Myrkir músíkdagar at the Harpa Concert Hall of Reykjavík, Iceland (Jan 2023) where it got the review:
“A mesmerizing performance of a stunningly powerful work.”
by 5:4 (‘Five over Four’)
Dr. Simon Cummings.
Later, the sixth, seventh, and eighth performances of it were staged for Birmingham Opera Company: Opera Lab. Open to public, these took place inside the New Street Station of Birmingham.
The ninth and tenth performances happened as part of Music in the Round, this time at Guildhall (Portsmouth) and Woolwich Works (London) where Gunduz & Middleton were hosted in a Q&A along with the violinist and composer Angharad Davies (Oct 2023) .
The eleventh performance of this work took place at Kongreßpark of Wien / Vienna in Austria as part the concert series: Kultur Sommer Wien.

Gunduz’s first work around Sumerian culture,
Lights on Inanna (2016-2017)
had its stage premiere along with the premiere of Alvin Lucier’s latest work: Monteverdi Shapero (2019)
at Banff Centre for the Arts and Creativity (Canada).
The first movement of

has been released by Sonorous Circle
as part of: Works for Loudspeakers #28
(Oct 2024, New Zealand).
A multi-disciplinary collaborative project of Dr. Gunduz’s is with Simon Wachsmuth, Emre Koyuncuoğlu, and Yasemin Nur:
‘Medea Traveling’ *
has been staged / showcased in its several versions:
as a multidisciplinary event of performances, video art & installation, experimental sound installation, performance, and interactive theater (which had Gunduz also as an improviser), and later as a theatre play.
Her long-term multi-disciplinary collaborative project with Roosmarijn Pallandt, where Gunduz composes around field recordings / images / moving images by artist Pallandt, is in-progress.
Gunduz’s works for museum/art-spaces with Senso di Voce are multi-faceted:
Their six-channel sound installation:
Sounding Spaces (2021)
was commissioned by and showcased at Play/Ground Festival.
The second iteration of this sound installation:
Sounding Spaces: Passage (2022),
was exhibited at the Frontispace Gallery of University of Rochester.
An audio-visual output of Senso di Voce’s own curation: Sonic Impressions (2022)
was developed in close relation to the Renaissance Impressions exhibition at the Memorial Art Gallery and was streamed in a webinar format of concert and talk by the institution.
This program includes Gunduz’s short work:
Bogalele which was inspired by the throat-playing tradition of the ‘Teke’ nomads in Turkiye and cantu a tenòre tradition of Sardinia — a tradition that is listed under the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity category of Unesco. Often inspired by traditional music, Dr. Gunduz had the chance of having private workshops with two separate ensembles of cantu a tenòre in 2023: Coro Gabriel (of Tempio Pausania) and Tenore Santa Maria Otzana (of Ottana) in Sardinia.
Dr. Gunduz has presented Lights on Inanna (2016-17), her initial work that was based on Sumerian tablets, under the Music in the Cult section of the Society of Biblical Literature’s (SBL) Annual Meeting in San Antonio, TX
(Nov. 2021).
A researcher of vocal performance, Esin Gunduz has offered workshops for the Indeterminacy Consulting Group & Festival (CA/USA), CS1 Curatorial Projects (USA), and Orchard of Pomegranates in Montréal (CA). Dr. Gunduz worked as an adjunct voice professor at Villa Maria College and holds a PhD in music composition from SUNY University at Buffalo.

Sense of Energy
proposes three
different types of
energy / phenomena
to work with:
1. contained potential
2. lift-induced drag
3- potential to kinetic

while the workshoppers
are encouraged to
come up with
other
‘types of energy’
to turn into sound.

An immersive,
six-channel
sound installation
that embodies
musical resonances
across time,
geography,
and genre.
While Senso di Voce’s
live performances
have worked in linear time,
in this six-channel
surround environment,
time is collapsed:
multiple fragments of
material are
heard simultaneously,
moving and changing to
draw out powerful connections
in the music.

Senso di Voce & Henry Birdsey
Tierceron
Other Minds is proud to present Tierceron, the first collaborative release between Senso di Voce (Esin Gunduz, voice, harmonium, composer, and Megan Kyle, oboe, English horn) and multi-instrumentalist Henry Birdsey.
The long journey to Tierceron began during a 2018 Senso di Voce performance that took place in Buffalo, NY’s storied Silo City, a complex of decommissioned grain elevators on the banks of the Buffalo River that has been host to numerous musical performances, art installations, and other artistic activity; a creative turn on the city’s industrial history. During this performance, Henry Birdsey, who was working as a recording engineer at the concert, made several impulse response recordings of the space that could then be used to digitally re-create the unique acoustics of the concrete silo compound.
One year later in 2019, Birdsey and Senso di Voce reconvened at Avaloch Farm Music Institute in Boscawen, NH, where in rural surroundings they improvised through the virtual industrial acoustics of Silo City recorded by Birdsey, a reconciling of memory that writer Liam Herb describes as “equal parts fireflies and lilac and twisted iron and concrete.” The generous blanket of hard-edged reverb allows the instrumental and vocal timbres to blend, entangle, and differentiate in unanticipated ways that disrupt our expectations of improvised music. Senso di Voce and Henry Birdsey play with notions of site-specific music, imagined and real acoustics existing simultaneously, gently guiding and defining the group’s improvisation. A new perspective on what it means to “Be There.”
The seven movements of Tierceron are improvised, each of the three musicians drawing from starkly different backgrounds. Oboist Megan Kyle’s background in orchestras and new music ensembles intersects with vocalist Esin Gunduz’s experience with Anatolian vocal styles, improvised music, and as a composer. Their long history of working as a duo no doubt contributes to their precision even in free musical contexts. Birdsey is a consistent presence in underground music, known through his extensive work with Tongue Depressor and as a solo artist (including his album Half-Dragged, released on Other Minds Records in 2021). These three disparate contexts blend into a work that is delicately textural and light and at the same time it’s arresting and engaging. Tierceron sits in an unknown territory between free improvisation’s skitters and scrambles and drone’s swirling weight and density.
